How can I get buy-in from line managers and senior managers for this type of intervention?

Getting managers fully engaged into this kind of management development activity requires some effort, in particular:
  • The process and its benefits needs to be communicated well
  • Senior managers need to endorse and role-model the relevant behaviours
  • There needs to be integration of the process with other management and performance development initiatives.

Research suggests that the following is helpful in order to get senior management to buy in:
  • A clear business case needs to be established that links positive manager behaviour to positive business outcomes.
  • Likewise, it can help to link positive manager behaviour to business planning and objectives.
  • A link can be made to national goals / initiatives
  • An explanation of the relevant legislation and / or risk of litigation with regard to stress and related problems can be helpful.
  • Making sure that responsibility is at a sufficiently senior level
  • Present the initiative as a joint HR / Occupational Health / Health and Safety Activity.

If you would like support in getting senior management buy-in e.g. through making a presentation to your senior management team, please contact us.
