Management competencies for sustainable employee engagement
Affinity Health at Work's previous research has revealed the management behaviours required to prevent and reduce stress at work (stress management competencies) and the management behaviours that drive employee engagement. To achieve sustainable employee engagement in their teams, so that people are engaged but not to the level where they overwork or get stressed, managers need to be competent in both these areas. Their 2011-12 research (just published) is brought the existing frameworks together and produced an overall framework of management competencies for sustainable employee engagement. This involved: firstly, validating the management competencies for employee engagement framework; and then exploring the links between this engagement framework and the ‘management competencies for preventing and reducing stress at work’. The research report and a guidance document for employers and managers can be downloaded below:

Perspectives on leadership in 2012 (Research Insight, CIPD)
This excellent Research Insight paper written by Occupational Psychologists, Emma Donaldson-Feilder and Rachel Lewis, describes the evolution of leadership theory, academic perspectives on leadership development and where HR fits into the modern leadership agenda. Although mainly aimed at an HR audience, anyone with an interest in leadership and its links with wellbeing and performance will find it very useful. The paper can be downloaded below...

Stress Management Competencies
All 4 research papers from this 4-year research programme, plus associated tools and resources, can be found on our stress management competencies' tools and resources page. Please scroll down the page to access all the resources.

Managing long-term absence
The Research Consortium papers can be found on this page on Managing Stress Absence. You need to scroll down the page a bit to find them, they are under the heading: Manager Behaviour and Long-Term Absence.

Managing conflict
This research for CIPD used the data from the Management competencies for preventing and reducing stress at work to look specifically at what managers need to do to manage conflict.  The resultant guide can be downloaded from CIPD's website (you need to login or register but it's free to access).

Management competencies for enhancing employee engagement
This research explored what managers need to do to enhance employee engagement and developed a framework of relevant behaviours. The research report is available from the CIPD website (you need to login or register but it's free to access).

Cancer and work
This research for Macmillan Cancer Support developed a self-management tool (we're just checking the link for this and will update the site soon) to help people resolve work issues during their cancer journey by asking the right questions of the right people. A further project developed a similar self-management tool for those caring for people with cancer while working:
