Recent research on stress in nursing
This page relates to stress in nursing. Nursing can be stressful and emotionally demanding work. Any relevant research papers and other resources that I come across regarding stress in nursing will be included below.
Self-compassion research
Self-compassion relates to self-forgiveness or the ability to 'cut yourself some slack'. It's a hot topic in psychology right now. Recent research has found that self-compassion significantly reduces the risk of illness from stress-related inflammation. See this article from Brandeis University.
(Previous large-scale studies have found that stress increases inflammation because of the disruption of the immune system related to the stress hormone, cortisol. Inflammation is now seen as a key factor in how and why stress leads to illness and disease.)
The research paper below from 2010 looks specifically at self-compassion and emotional intelligence in nurses. The paper was published in The International Journal of Nursing Practice.
