Tackling Stress in the NHS: Project Overview and Links

The Tackling Stress in the NHS project was launched in February 2015 by Business Psychologist, Alan Bradshaw, to raise awareness of work-related stress in the NHS and to explore solutions. Alan's also planning events on this topic Autumn 2015 onwards.

Stress is a huge and costly problem in the NHS, impacting both on employers and employees. Of course, it's also a complex issue and not simple to solve, but there's a lot that can be done to prevent and reduce stress. In the last couple of years, Alan has worked with several NHS Trusts, working with managers and staff to help them manage work-related stress and boost their resilience. It's this experience that's prompted Alan to set up this project - to do something about stress in the NHS and make a difference to staff wellbeing.

Tackling Stress in the NHS: Tools and Resources
Here are links to some great resources relating to tackling stress in the NHS:
  • Key statistics on the NHS - from the NHS Confederation (most stats here relate to England only)
  • The NHS Manager's Code - developed by Professor Derek Mowbray (you can also download the Code and view 3 videos about aspects of the Code from this link)
  • Work Positive Tool - a web-enabled stress and wellbeing survey tool, developed by NHS Scotland but which can also be used elsewhere
  • Management Development Checklists for Sustainable Wellbeing - these excellent checklists can help ensure that your management development programmes maximize the likelihood of sustainable improvements in staff wellbeing
  • Stress Management Competency tools and resources - these resources include assessment tools, reports and guidance around manager behaviours known to prevent and reduce stress
  • NHS Employers' guidance [for NHS managers] on the prevention and management of stress at work
  • NHS Staff Survey data 2003-1013 - this is where you can access all NHS staff survey data from 2003 to 2013
  • Quality Watch analyses  - this page has links to Quality Watch analyses specifically relating to NHS staff stress and wellbeing
  • Health & Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) - data on trends in NHS sickness absence - sickness absence overall has declined, however data elsewhere indicate that work-related stress has increased (see the Quality Watch link for more on this)

More links to relevant, information tools and resources will be posted on this page over time. We'll also be adding a section where you can download relevant reports, so please bookmark this page and check back here from time to time
