Stress: Business Case Tools

_Stress and Mental Wellbeing: Cost and Return-on-Investment Tool
The tool you can download below was developed by the [UK] National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to accompany guidance launched by NICE in 2009.
This is a spreadsheet tool you can use to calculate the costs of mental ill health and stress and the likely savings if your organization takes positive action. It should work with later versions of Microsoft Excel and with open source equivalents such as LibreOffice Calc.

Once you open it up it's fairly self-explanatory. You'll need some key stats or management information to 'plug in' to the tool, which you'll probably be able to get from your HR Department
.

The tool enables you to calculate the likely costs of three aspects due to mental ill-health and stress:
  1. Absence
  2. Staff turnover
  3. Presenteeism*

The tool also calculates the likely savings from taking 'simple steps' to prevent and reduce stress. Simple steps could be providing suitable training for managers and support for employees.

*Presenteeism
is where people are at work (present) but are unproductive or ineffective. This might be because they are feeling unwell, stressed or demotivated. Recent research puts the cost of presenteeism at roughly 50% more than absenteeism. It's been found to be more common among higher paid staff such as professionals, managers and executives (where there may be more stigma associated with being absent, especially with a stress-related illness!).

Essentially you can plug in some key stats and the tool does the rest - a great tool and can be a powerful persuader.

Please bear in mind that these costs are in GB Pounds and from 2009, but with a currency converter and allowing for inflation you should get a good steer on the costs and savings. You can download the tool directly below...
